5 Areas to Improve Team Work Skills

There are so many different fields in the workforce today and there are so many different teams and work styles in those different fields. It can seem overwhelming to know what skills are needed and what skills may need to be enhanced in a team. Luckily, there is a small handful of skills that are used by nearly every team, in any field, remote or in-person. Read on to learn more about these skills and what you can do to help your team building go to the next level.

Communication

This is probably the most important skill for any team that works together. Understanding how to communicate with others across a variety of formats (verbal, written, graphical) can improve a team’s understanding of their projects and make their process more efficient.

Collaboration

Collaboration is all about a team working together. Each team member needs to be contributing to the success of the team. No one should be left behind because every team member should be providing insight, answers, and ideas for the team to work off of.

Coordination

Once the team is communicating and collaborating, they need to be coordinating. Not every member of the team has the same skill set or strengths. Not every task requires the same number of people or the same amount of time. It is important to put the right people on the right task at the right time. This is what coordination is all about.

Learning Agility

This skill is less known than the others we have mentioned so far, but it is extremely important to a team’s overall success. Learning agility is all about knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do. Adapting quickly to changes or unexpected circumstances is all a part of learning agility. A team that can do this well can be successful even in the most challenging and fast paced situations.

Inclusion

Being a part of a team is not enough for everyone to be included. Everyone needs to be accepted. They need to be actively working with everyone and everyone needs to see and recognize their value within the team. Knowing that you are accepted and included in the team makes it easier to work together and have a safe space for every person on the team.

Conclusion

All of these skills can be taught, practiced and enhanced. If you notice that your team is struggling in one of these areas it might be time to get a team building activity going that focuses on one of these skills. There are so many different team building and virtual team building activities. Virtual team building is a great option for remote teams, but it can also be good for in-person teams to stretch their capabilities in a new space. Looking for activities like escape rooms is a great way to use several different skills and have a fun time doing it!
